Eleven letters by Stephens (ca. 1850-1901) together with two letters received (1863-1866) and copies of two letters by Stephens concerning his conflict with William Holman Hunt (1906). Included in Stephens's letters are one regarding a proposed portrait of a young boy (1854) and one concerning his willingness to edit the memoirs of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1895). William Holman Hunt was an English artist and painter. Despite his father's objections, he sought a career as an artist, and studied art at the Royal Academy, where he met Millais and Rossetti; the three of them co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Hunt's paintings are richly colored and highly detailed; many have religious or moralistic connotations. He made several journeys to the Middle East, and painted scenes of Jerusalem.
